Dr. Steven J. Thornton, MD
Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon | Sports Medicine Specialist | Dallas, TX
The Practice
Dr. Steven J. Thornton, MD is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist serving patients throughout the Dallas and Fort Worth metroplex. With fellowship training at Cornell University’s Hospital for Special Surgery and decades of clinical experience, Dr. Thornton leads a practice built on one clear promise: expert, personalized care that helps patients get back to the life they love.
The practice specializes in minimally invasive procedures for shoulder, knee, hip, and elbow injuries, combining cutting-edge surgical technique with a genuinely patient centered approach that puts people, not just diagnoses, at the center of every decision.
How We Got Here

Dr. Thornton founded his practice in 2004 with a straightforward but ambitious goal: to bring fellowship-trained, subspecialty orthopedic expertise to patients in the Dallas and Fort Worth area without making them travel to a major academic medical center to get it.
Having trained at some of the most respected institutions in the country, including the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, UT Southwestern Medical Center for his residency, and Cornell University’s Hospital for Special Surgery for his fellowship, Dr. Thornton returned to North Texas with a depth of training that was uncommon in the region at the time.
Over the years, the practice has grown to serve patients at multiple locations across the metroplex, including Dallas, Frisco, Plano, Mesquite, and Arlington. What has never changed is the standard of care. Patients continue to see Dr. Thornton directly, receive individualized treatment plans, and benefit from surgical and nonsurgical expertise that has been recognized by peers and patients alike for more than two decades.

How We Work
The practice operates as a collaborative, patient-centered, quality-driven clinical environment where every team member, from surgeons and physician assistants to administrative staff, is aligned around one goal: delivering an exceptional experience and outcome for every patient who walks through the door.
Dr. Thornton’s hiring philosophy centers on finding specialists and support staff who bring both clinical competence and genuine compassion. Technical skill matters enormously in orthopedic care, but so does how patients feel when they are nervous, in pain, or uncertain about their options. The team is built to deliver on both.
Giving Back
Dr. Thornton and his team are committed to the health of the broader North Texas community, not just the patients who come through their doors. The practice actively supports local athletic communities and looks for opportunities to extend quality orthopedic education and care to those who need it most.
